I started freelancing in 2014 for a real estate company in the US. I wasn’t managing social media at first, but when I worked for an E-Commerce company I started learning the basics. Many companies today use social media to promote products and services. Hiring a social media manager has become a necessity for many businesses so the owners can focus on other important things while someone else is taking care of the business online.

“How did you become a social media manager?”. I’ve always been ask this question whenever someone finds out what I do. Being a social media manager is not an easy task. It takes continuous market research to become really effective at it. A social media manager helps businesses grow their online presence through effective digital marketing strategy. So before jumping into it here are a few tips and advice on how to become a social media manager.

What does a social manager do?

Social media management has a lot of aspects in it. It’s important that you learn (or already have) these skills to become a social media manager. The online marketing portfolio includes:

  • Content Marketing
  • Social Media Strategy
  • Brand
  • Public Relations
  • Customer Service
  • Community Growth and Management

Some of the tasks are the following:

  • Writing and scheduling posts
  • Running ads
  • Responding to followers
  • Creating social media graphics
  • SEO
  • Market Research

You don’t need to offer all of these services but you will really become an effective SMM if you know all of these. You don’t need to be an expert in all but at least know the basics. These skills can be learned through application on your daily work.

Social media management is all about online presence of the business. You don’t want to message a company and not being responded to right away. Your task is to make sure that customers get the answer they want the soonest possible time.

On the business end, what they want is to build their brand. Your job is to build an online reputation recognizable to them alone. A brand that will set them apart from competition. Constant market research is the key to achieving this. You have to know where your customers are and make sure you reach the right audience at the right platform.

Some of the market research includes – competitor, hashtags, type of effective posts, your niche, ads, insights and more.

What tools you need to learn?

To become effective in managing social media accounts you have to know what to use on which platform. Here are the list of some of the tools we use:

  • Scheduler – ex. Hootsuite, Buffer
  • Analytics
  • Google Trend
  • Google Alert
  • Social Kickstart
  • Zoho
  • Canva
  • WordPress
  • Manychat

This list could go on forever but the important thing is to learn what to use in which platform and which is more effective. Using the right tool is essential in your daily tasks. You can suggest to your client the tools which you think can significantly help you and can bring in the results you want.

How do you build a brand?

Brand is what’s going to set the business apart from competitors. To do so you must do a market research so you can use an effective marketing strategy on social media. In this aspect you have find out who your competitors are and who your influencers are. Your competitors are the business selling the same products or services as yours and your influencer is a bigger brand in the same niche with much bigger followings.

Your task is to know what the competitors are doing, where they market their products or services and how they are doing it. Identify which of them are effective and which you can apply to your own. If the business is just starting out, the help of an influencer is effective in driving new customers. The goal is to get an influencer endorse your products or services. This can help build a lot of aspect in your brand – new customers, community growth, followings and online presence. Getting an influencer in some cases involves money as some of them ask for payment to post your products in their social media account/s which you can discuss with your client.

Viral posts, holidays and events related to your niche are important factors as well to be able to have a good marketing strategy for the brand.

Do I need my own social media accounts to be a SMM?

The answer is YES. To become believable that you can be an effective social media manager, you must have first hand experience of using it. How do you expect someone to manage a business Instagram account if you do not even know how to use it? In the case of Instagram there are so many aspects of it that can really drive sales and new customers into the business. Things such as Stories, IGTV, hashtags and Links are some of them.

What skills do you need to become a social media manager?

Social media managers do not have a formal training however as I’ve mentioned several times in this article market research is the key to become effective. Having extra skills like blogging or SEO can very well help you though.

Here are some of the basic skills you need to possess:

  • Grammar – trolls love to call out wrong spelling so be very careful with it
  • Good customer service
  • Content writing
  • Graphics
  • Time management
  • Keyword research

How much does a social media manager make?

Depending on the skills, SMM can charge $250-$500 per month for posting daily updates on Facebook. You can charge more or less depending on how many social media accounts you will handle and if your task will involve customer service.

I charge $500 per month per client for managing Facebook, Twiter and Instagram. You can also charge an hourly rate depending on your skill level, experience and services you will offer. Services with Facebook ads and promoted pins will give you much higher rate.

How do I promote my services?

I strongly advice you to create your own website. You do not need a full-fledged website but a simple static page will do. You can build your portfolio on your website so that interested clients can see your past works. This is also where they can learn more about what you do and services you offer.

You can get hosting services through Bluehost, Godaddy or WordPress. I recommend a simple theme that you can design on your own. There are drag and drop themes available on WordPress which are easy to do even if you are not an expert in web designing.
