Dropshipping 101: Best Dropshipping Products to Sell 2019

Before we dive into the list of dropshipping products to sell, there are a few things we need to go over to make sure you choose the right products for your dropshipping business.

It is a must to do market research before you decide on what to sell so that your business can have a solid foundation. Most of the successful dropshipping businesses I know have done extensive research to make sure they sell the “winning product”.

“Winning product” is a common term in E-Commerce which is the best selling item in your product line. This is the result of market research and a little bit of trial and error.

What do I mean by that?

Many merchants do trial and error to test their products and find the winning ones. For example, if you sell sporting goods and has an average of about 15 products on your store, check regularly which product/s sell and which doesn’t. So if a gym mat doesn’t sell no matter how you market it, then do competitor research and see how they are marketing the same product you’re selling. You may also want find new products people are most likely to buy and test it too.

By doing so you’ll be able to come up with a winning product line.

Take note though that this trial and error sometimes wouldn’t be necessary if you’ve done your homework in the beginning – market research. Also in some cases, you will find your winning product by accident. Trust me it can happen. My winning product isn’t even the primary product for my business niche. But it’s doing well.

Bottom line here is, market research for the niche – target audience, age, gender, income bracket will give you the idea what to sell, whom to sell them and how to market.

There are a lot of things to consider before actually deciding on which products to sell. It’s very important to know who your target market is and niche.

What is niche?

A niche market is the subset of the market on which a specific product is focused. The market niche defines the product features aimed at satisfying specific market needs, as well as the price range, production quality and the demographics that it is intended to target. It is also a small market segment.

Some examples of niche are – sports, furniture, kitchen, computer accessories etc.

I would also like to highlight that having knowledge about the niche you want to build a business around is extremely important. Why? This is so that you’ll be able to handle customer service yourself when you’re starting out.

Another thing is that you should be able to answer customer questions about the product as well as properly market them to your customers.

You shouldn’t build a business around product or niche with which you have very little to no knowledge about. It must be something you’re familiar with.

So how do you do this market research? Let’s go to the next section…

Step by step guide to know your target market and niche.

First and foremost before you use keyword research tools and other product research tools out there, I suggest you check first with yourself what your hobbies are, products you like and things you are passionate about. I’m pretty sure you have wealth of information and inspiration floating in your brain on what to sell.

Make a list of these ideas and use Pinterest and Instagram as well as Amazon and Ebay to research the companies selling them. This is the start of your market research. Pinterest and Instagram are GOLD MINES of inspiration and product ideas that you can take advantage of. It’s not all on Facebook believe me.

Here are some tips to help know your target market and niche better:

Step 1: Make sure there is a current demand for your product.

By using keyword search tool such as Google Trend, KW Finder or Semrush, you will have an idea how many people are searching for this product on a monthly basis via keyword ranking. The idea is for your keyword to have high number of research results and find the product around it.

For example: research ‘yoga’, find other related keywords around it and products in this niche.

However if your product idea is fairly new to the market, it may not have high results in ranking yet. So ideally you will have to check on competitors to see how their are doing.

Step 2: Check how seasonal the product is.

You definitely do not want to sell seasonal products on your store but products that can sell anytime of the year. You have to understand the buying patterns of the customers for a particular product, to find out if it is seasonal or not.

Google Trend is a tool that can help you figure this out. Through keywords related to the product, you’ll be able to identify how seasonal a product is because it will give you a graphical analysis of the peak season for any given product or keyword.

The goal is to identify products that customers will buy repeatedly.

Step 3: Know your competitor.

Research who your competition are and observe how they market their products. Check their website, social media platforms, other sales channels such as Amazon and Ebay. Check their reviews, comments and overall engagement.

Find out if there are any opportunities you can find, where your competitor is lacking or not meeting the market needs  and close that gap.

Factors to consider about your target market.

Demographics

These are physical location/geography, income bracket, gender, age, etc. that will help you understand how big your audience is, where they are located and most importantly how you will market your products to them.

Gender

As you may already know, men and women have different spending and purchasing patterns. Depending on your niche this is a very important factor to study. The market behavior and interest is very important in knowing how to market your products to them.

For example if you want to sell dresses for adult women, you have to understand what they are interested in and what they research in relation to this product. Women in this segment like fashion tips and advice, thus you may want to publish blogs and posts relating to that so you can attract women in this segment to follow your social media accounts and eventually visit your website and buy your products.

I will discuss this in detail in Section C of this training and will give you complete and detailed guide on how to do it effectively. If you know Gary Vaynerchuk, I went on the same training as his team on how to grow social media channels and convert your followers into loyal and buying customers 🙂

It was one of the most expensive social media marketing training today but I will be sharing with you the most important parts of that training for free!

Age

Knowing the age bracket of your target market is extremely important in knowing their spending patterns. If your target market are millennials, they fall into the lower income bracket and may spend less, thus selling expensive products to them may not be ideal.

Those of 60 years of age and above do not spend time on social media thus it may be a pretty difficult market to reach.

Type of Customer

Are you selling to consumers or business? This is what they call B2C – business to consumer and B2B – business to business. I will just tap into that a little more for those who are not familiar with it.

B2C is selling to individuals who are the end users of the product

B2B is selling to businesses who will then market the product to consumers. (Example selling parts or materials of a product.)

With this, it is understood that B2B works pretty much like wholesaling/ bulk order.

What are the tools available to use for product and market research?

I can recommend a few research tools that can help you with this task but let’s go ahead and start with the most simple and readily available yet very powerful research tool – Google.

If you already have an idea which product to sell or which niche to build business around, go to Google and type the product type or niche and see which companies sell these products. Put them in the Google sheet (you can use offline tools such as MS Excel) and start building your list.

Example: If you think backpack would be a good product to sell, go to google and see what people are searching about backpacks.

You can also do this on Amazon to find out what kind of backpacks people search for, make sure to set your zip code to any US location to get US results.

Dropshipping products to sell

Also do take note the social media platforms your competitors are on and the marketing platform they use such as Amazon, Shopify or Ebay. Also list their products, promotions, number of followers etc. Any relevant information you will find should be in the spreadsheet.

Once you’ve completed the spreadsheet, you must already have an idea which product to sell and how to market them.

I also suggest for you to go to Aliexpress and look for this product. Also take note of the suppliers selling these products, their orders and store’s percentage of positive feedback.

It is important to choose the supplier with no less than 95% positive feedback. This topic will be discussed in detail in the next lesson of this training.

Lastly here is how you can find the best sellers today that are possible winning product for your dropshipping business:

How do I find trending items on Amazon?

To find these products, log onto Amazon and then click on Best Sellers which can be found through a search or, at the side of the home page. From there, you can narrow your search by clicking on individual categories such as books, electronics or toys.
